PARIS: Aitana Bonmati led a Spanish comeback with a goal and an assist, securing a 2-1 win over Japan, while the United States put in a convincing 3-0 win over Zambia on the opening day of the Olympic women’s soccer tournament on Thursday.
The U.S. began its bid for a fifth gold medal with an impressive victory at Nice Stadium. Trinity Rodman opened the scoring with a brilliant move in the 17th minute, and Mallory Swanson scored twice in quick succession between the 24th and 25th minutes, securing their first three points in Group B. Zambia’s task was made even tougher after Pauline Zulu was sent off in tears in the 30th minute.
In Nantes, Olympic newcomers Spain came from behind early to beat Group C opponents Japan. The victory was especially sweet as it avenged a 4-0 group-stage defeat to Japan at last year’s World Cup, which Spain eventually won. Aoba Fujino’s beautiful free kick had initially put Japan ahead, but Bonmati equalized nine minutes later with a simple finish.
Spain dominated possession throughout the second half and secured victory in the 74th minute through a goal from Mariona Caldentey, assisted by Bonmati, to move top of the group.
“We started the Olympics very well. I am happy with this victory. The defeat to Japan in the World Cup left a deep sense of dissatisfaction,” said Bonmati. “The goal we conceded did not affect our mindset. We continued to play our game and deserved to win.”
